Central Wales: An English Kossovo?

Picture: Toni Lewis Original, I have reworked via computor to symbolise a possible ''English Night'' coming over 'Canol Cymru'. Some say, it's almost that now? Indeed is Central Cymru wide open for a form of ''SAISLEBENSRAUM'', that this area of Cymru has proved fertile territory for ''living space'' for colonial settlement has been an historic truth since the middle ages. Fortunatly, prior to that the Cymry could resist enough the first Saxon - Mercian assualts, and indeed were capable of launching such offensive - defence, that Offa had to build that famous Dyke of his. However, come the Middle ages and a ''Welsh Home Goal'', by that I mean the killing of the first King of a united Cymru Gruffydd ap Llywelyn on 5 August 1063. This left Cymru and the lands east of the Cambrian Mountains white open for aggressive assault by the Normans, who over a number of decades were able to establish their 'Marchia Wallia' but lucky for us ''colonial settlement'' in central Cymru was in main limited to areas around Castle Towns and boroughs, and not as much devided into the 'Welshries' and 'Englishries' of the South, nor witness total colonisation, as by Flemish settlers in Pembrokeshire.

Toward the end of the middle ages, English reclaimation of land on the eastern coastal areas, and in the Tudor times, large scale urban growth and colonisation of America. All contributed to saving Wales and central Cymru from total Colonial Settlement, even following the conquest of 'Pura Walliae' by Edward I it did not lead to Colonial settlement on a grand scale, other than in 'Y Perfeddwlad' which actually did witness 'Ethnic Cleansing' on a grand scale. For much of the early modern period, the rise in economic good fortunes allowed for native Welsh population increase throughout the land. It is ironically the industrial revolution in the South that draws native rural people from the interland to the Iron and coal areas, in the Vale of Glamorgan. I know that so many Cymry left the land in Bro Morgannwg' to become 'industrial workers' that farmers had to recruit farm labourers from over the border or face economic ruin. I do not know if there was a similar experience in 'Canol Cymru'.

I do know that the growth of a weaving industry in mid Wales possibly kept the ''native people'' at home so to speak. However, it seeem there was an ''inward migration'' of English Workers into mid - Wales at this time, as following the Llanidloes Rising of 1839, certain ''Welsh Commentators'' were want to blame the English for the ''disturbences'' (not true of course, the Welsh did it!). It is the late 19th century growth of ''Victorian Tourism'' that rekindles English interest in Mid-Wales, the ''Spa Towns'' in particular are a great draw. I have not really studied the matter of inward migration to Central Cymru greatly but I immagine WWI left a vacuum in the native population, and of course the gradual ''mechanisation'' of farming encouraged depopulation which has been the trend since, but since the 60's, increasingly central Cymru has become attractive to those out of England seeking the ''good life''. The ''Hippies'' have in recent years given way to more ''well heeled'' drop outs. In recent times the matter of a so called ''White Flight'' has been suggested prompting further ''inward migration'', this has become a contraversial term to use as ''Mewnlifiad''. Can it get worse? Check it out?

I know for a fact that if one picks up ''whats on?'' leaflets in most towns in Central Cymru, not only does one see that largelly ''English Settler'' entertaiments and activities etc are in the main and the norm. Not only that but the ''Cross Border'' links in ''Anglo - Welsh Border Society'', makes of it a very merged ''Anglo Accultralised Frontier Zone'' with no clear ''Cultural difference''. Other of course than such ''artificialy created'' by the ''Welsh Language Industry'' via Mentrau Iaith whilst ''Anglo'' Culuture becomes the greater ''Social Community Norm''. Of course this is all anyway an International ''global norm'' that is irristable from the Amazon to Borneo, much now super motivated by the internet and mobile phones. This is altogether a difficult issue, when we talk of ''Culture'' in terms of people and society, after all even I and a great many patriots find it hard not to be ''acculturalised'' nor are many able to completly resist ''Anglicisation''. Such matters are made worse, for myself at least with the ''dilemma'' of a ''Cymraeg Culture'' that increasingly becomes the ''product'' of a ''Welsh Language Industry'' under the control of 'Y Crachach Newydd' - England's Client Tribe in Wales. This leads to such as the ''Bafta Bourgeouise'' and now the monster of ''Big Brother Bollocks'' being promoted as means to ''Save Cymraeg?'' when really it's just about boosting S4C's declining viewing figures and keeping 'Y Crachach Newydd' in well paying jobs, in Caerdydd of course. Even worse perhaps is that the ''Cymraeg Media'' of all kinds owes so much to the ''Saxon Shilling'' that it is as much controlled and directed by various means, as an earlier 19th century ''WASP Media'' came to be a means of ''religous social control'' in interst of a rising native capitalism in service to expanding English Imperialism. If any one out there tries to tell me that BBC Wales and BBC CYMRU is not controlled, all I can say is you just have your head well placed where the ''Sun Does Not Shine''.

Yes! when one talks of ''Culture'' it does get fraught with ''intellectual difficulties'' so to talk of ''Anglicisation'' and ''acculturalisation'', I am actually finding it very difficult to make stand on such in ''Cultural terms''. I at end of the day feel more at home in making the historcal, political and economic case and arguements against Colonialism and Colonial Settlement. Suffice for me to conclude by having drawn your attention to the above, I suggest it is pertinant to ask the question: Could Central Cymru, become an ''English Kossovo?''

The head of 'Bwrdd Iaith yr Cymraeg, this week caused contraversy by raising the issue of ''inward migration'' to those areas West of the Cambrian Mountains, this was once refferred to has ''MEWNLIFIAD''. Again the stress is on the West aka 'Tiroedd Cunedda' (see earlier posting in this blog), and again the stress is on inward migration but no mention of the fact that the rural petite bougeouise, those with desires to join the ranks of a growing ''Crachach Newydd'' in the post founding S4C era ''media boom'' in Caerdydd actually contributed to allowing for the ''Sais'' to fill a vaccuum in the communities they have been leaving for the last 30 odd years. So, without addressing that hard fact, I am weary of 'Y Crachach' be they ''old or new'' on this issue of ''Inward Migration'', indeed they have nothing new to say and are generally ''Singing the Old Song''. MAY I SUGGEST THEY FOCUS ATTENTION ON 'EMMIGRATION' FOR A CHANGE AND POSSIBLY REVERSE MUCH OF THE PROBLEM BY MOVING S4C TO MACHYNLLETH, AFTER ALL WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE IN CAERDYDD? IS IT BECAUSE THE 'PLANT CRACHACH' NOW ENJOY BEING ''PONTCANNA PATAGONIANS'' AND ''BAE BABES' ATTENDING BAFTAS etc, that the thought of returning to the ''Hen Gwlad'' is strictly a NO! NO! If this is true, and the ''outward migration'' continues of native educated young people, and their places in communities are replaced by the ''Sais'', then there really is no hope, is there? So, face reality ''Back to the Land'' and also breed more babies, it's the only real radical solution. Please do not ask for more money for Yr Hen Iaith, you need to be spending what you got already, much better and more socially usefully. Not perhaps seeing much of it filling the pockets of ''Crachach Capitalists'' and those who aspire to be ''Language Millionaires'', and ain't that part of the truth? I want go so far as ''NATIONALISE THE NATIONAL LANGUAGE'', but I do think there is a great need to see more, much more ''COMMUNALISATION OF THE CASH FOR CYMRAEG''. Thinks on it!

Now back to Central Cymru, which may get ignored with all this attention being again drawn to the lands beyound the Cambrian chain of mountains, the long mountainous Spine that should become an unbreakable Rock Hard Frontier for the ancient lands of Cunedda 'TIROEDD CUNEDDA'. Now read on:

Siol nan Gaideal on Kosovo - An Adfywiad Glwadgarol Comment First: Nothing more shows the duplicity of Anglo - American Policy, The U.N. and European Union than in the deliberate break up of Yugoslavia, there is at least one self advancing member of the ''PAUP's (Pints Are Us Patriots)'' I know of who has written in defence of this dismemberment of Yugoslavia; one who is himself of ''Petite Bourgeoisie'' background and no doubt with ''Crachach'' pretensions. His letters to Western Mail attacking Serbia have clouded the issue with the usual ''blather'' that is some times associated with ''linguistic nationalism''. In so far that Serbia was oppressing the other ''Slav Groupings'' which is a load of ''bollocks''. Before one looks at this issue keep in mind the following facts:

1: In looking at Yugoslavia please do not look at it as Great Britain, re Anglo - Saxons and Celts but rather think in terms of A United Celtia - ''Celtica'' and if such had been achieved how better it would have been to resist English aggression and conquest. Now consider the history of Pan Slavism and Yugoslavia, if you wish as I often think , see Serbs as the Irish, Croats as the Scots with the Welsh as Slovenes. Regards the latter think of the Welsh desire to be ''Welsh Anglo - Saxon Protestants'' and consider how the Slovenes desire to be considered an ''Alpine People'' and not Slavs. Do you get the picture? LAST BUT NOT LEAST THINK ''PAN CELTIC'' OK!

2: Keep in mind Serbian long historical defence of the Slavs, not least regard Austrian aggression on eve of WW I, particularly remember Serbian patriots heroic action in assassination of the Austrian tyrant in answer to Austrian hostility of mounting military manoeuvres aimed to intimidate Serbia.

3: Keep in mind the heroic resistance to Austro - German Invasion,The Serb Army defeated but determined not to surrender made gallant retreat through a wintry Kosovo, all the way being attacked by Kosovan bandits and Muslim fanatics who killed men. women and children alike. However, the cost was high as the Serbian Army were never again fit to engage in military activity again for duration of World War I.

4: Since the middle ages the Germans more than most have considered central Europe their zone of influence and aggression, not least during WW II when Hitler invaded Yugoslavia as means to circumvent Russia to reach the Oil Fields of the Caucuses and further field. I have no doubt that the contemporary break up of Yugoslavia was for same end purpose as well as destroying a remaining bastion of Communism. It is interesting that to this end the Germans were the ''Trojan Horse'' and it was their totally 'Illegal' (by U.N. Policy) recognition's of Slovenia that began the wars that eventually broke up Yugoslavia.

5: Atrocities must be condemned and cannot be excused but perhaps before fingers are pointed only at Serbia as the only ''guilty party'' please study history of the Balkans and not least Bosnian and Kosovan atrocities against Serbs during WW I and Catholic Croat atrocities against the Serbs during WW II. Further, please be aware that since end of WW I ''Croat Catholic Fascist'' Exiles in Austrailia, Canada and USA aided by the CIA have carried out a ''Terrorist Campaign'' against Yugoslavia.
