who was the last native prince of wales?
Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (c1223-1282), Owain Goch’s full brother, was officially the first and last native prince of Wales. He assumed the self proclaimed title in 1258, rising to power in the Kingdom of Gwynedd (incorporating Anglesey) by ousting his three brothers. In the middle ages, Wales was fragmented into ancient independent kingdoms, but Llywelyn became generally became accepted as the national leader. However, it wasn’t until 1267, in the Treaty of Montgomery, that King Henry III formally recognised the title ‘Prince of Wales’: The title of Prince of Wales, although used many times before this, was not official until now.
In 1277, Llywelyn ap Gruffydd declared war on England, but support was weak and he surrendered soon after and, as a consequence, was restricted from all his territories east of the Conwy river. However, in 1282 his brother, Dafydd ap Gruffydd launched a second war on England and Llewellyn was killed in a battle at Iron Bridge.
The conquest of Wales by Edward I was complete by June 1283, and although this meant the Principality of Wales was incorporated into England, it also led to an extensive project of castle building. King Edward I built a series of castles that have proved to be some of Wales’ best attractions, including Conwy Castle,Caernarfon Castle, Harlech Castle and Beaumaris Castle (never completed), which are now (combined) a UNESCO world heritage site.
could a future king or queen be born in wales?
In 1284, Edward’s son Edward (later Edward II) was born at Caernarfon castle and subsequently (1301) became the first English prince to be invested as the Prince of Wales. This act started the tradition in investing the heir-apparent of the monarch with the title of Prince of Wales.
At present Charles is the Prince of Wales, but should he become king it is expected that Prince William will be invested with the title. His official title now is Prince William of Wales. Any children of Prince William will take the Prince/Princess Name of Wales title.
However, the engagement of William and Katehas once again raised the question of whether Charles may step aside in succession so that William can take the throne. Should this happen before an heir is born it would be expected that the first male child would be invested as Prince of Wales after birth. A first daughter of the monarch would normally take the title of Princess Royal, but only if there is no Princess Royal at the time (Princess Anne currently has the title and will keep it until her death). Otherwise, any daughters of King William IV, as he would be known, would have the title Princess Name, and would drop the ‘of Wales’ part of the title.
The last Prince of Wales to be born in Wales wasHenry V, in Monmothshire in either 1386 or 1387, who was given the title in 1399 when his farther Henry IV became king.
What a great boost for Wales it would be if a future Prince of Wales, and perhaps future King or Queen, were to be born on Welsh soil.
